As a Utah State Certified Concealed Firearms Instructor I teach my students the importance of protecting those that they love.  I am not an advocate of storing your pistol inside your nightstand or under your mattress; in fact this is quite dangerous.  Statistics have shown accidental deaths have occurred by people having access their firearms within an arms reach of their beds.  I teach my students that if they are startled to the sound of smashing glass or someone entering their home; they must be alert to safely handle a weapon. Getting up and walking 5 to 15 feet is critical to being of sound mind and able to make critical decisions that will affect the safety of their loved ones.  Safes are great for storing your hunting rifles, pistols, money and gold; I feel everyone should own one, I do.  The problem is getting onto a safe quickly and hoping the bad guy isn’t between you and the safe! You need to be able to retrieve your defense weapon of choice in approximately five seconds and in many cases in complete darkness. Personally, I have felt fear; uncertainty and adrenaline of combat and simple motor skills are compounded and not easily performed.  I don’t want to try opening my safe in a crisis situation feeling like I have mittens on cold hands trying to dial a combination or use a key!  When and if an intruder enters my home I want to be able to react with assurance and speed not fear.
